Divine Comic: Graphic Novel Workshop

Archives and Special Collections

Wednesday 27th April, 12 – 1pm

Join comic artist, essayist and zine-maker Mia Nie in a workshop where you will be guided to begin creation of your own graphic novel or comic. Taking inspiration from the artistic responses to Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy, currently on display in Epic and Divine: Dante’s World on Level 1 of the Baillieu Library and her own comic centered on the afterlife, Samsara Dreamin, Mia will guide participants through the process of translating journeys, real or imagined onto the page.  This workshop is aimed at all levels of experience. If you like to draw, or would like to learn, this workshop is for you!

Mia Nie is a Chinese-Australian comic artist, essayist and zine-maker. Her comics have been nominated for the National Cartoonist Society’s Reuben Awards, and she has been published in Liminal Magazine, Pencilled In, the Suburban Review and Strange Horizons. Her work explores the complexities, contradictions, and deeply felt desires of transgender subjectivity. She is passionate about understanding queer history and imagining queer futures. Mia is currently working on her first graphic novel.

This event is free but bookings are essential. Depending on numbers, the workshop may be split into two groups of participants. The event running time is 1 hour.

*Please view the exhibition on Level 1 before you attend the workshop, as Mia will be discussing themes and works on display.
